IT is a chance to make friends, gain confidence and even save lives!

People who help out at the British Heart Foundation charity shop in Widnes say it has given them a new lease of life.

One woman said: "It is the most rewarding job I have ever had."

Another lady added: "You make lots of friends. There is a very relaxed atmosphere. I really enjoy it."

Some bereaved people, who have lost partners, say it helped them to pluck up courage to go out again and seek company.

Heart patients recovering from illness, say mixing with people provides a great tonic.

A coffee morning was held this week, at the shop in Albert Square, to attract more volunteers.

Manager Julie Horrocks, said: "It was a big success. I am absolutely delighted with the response.

"We have three definite new volunteers and three potential ones. I will fit in with whatever people can offer, whether it is just one hour a week or more.

"There is a lot of work behind the scenes, you don't have to be in the shop and I give them full training.

"It is a good way of getting back, mixing with people and gaining confidence if you have not worked for some time. I am more than happy to provide references to help volunteers get a job.

"People come to us who have suffered bereavements or are recovering from illness. There is a lovely atmosphere here. It gives people a chance to get out of the house."

All the money raised supports and funds research into the causes, diagnosis and prevention of heart disease. The charity also provides education and patient care programmes.

Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer is welcome to pop into the shop anytime for a chat and a cup of tea.
