CONTENTIOUS plans to erect a phone mast outside homes in Widnes were rejected by Halton Council this week.

Members of the development control and licensing committee, turned down the application on Monday evening, after listening to the concerns of local residents.

BT Cellnet wanted to place a 10 metre high mast and two equipment cabins on a grass verge facing 82 Leigh Avenue.

Neighbouring residents, ward councillors, St Bede's RC Infant and Junior Schools and Halton Friends of the Earth were consulted by the Council.

Some 63 letters and a 189-signed petition were received.

Councillors agreed that this application did need their approval and refused it on siting grounds.

Committee chairman, Cllr Dennis Middlemass, said: "We refused to give the approval because the mast and its equipment cabins would result in a cluttering effect of street furniture on that site, which is close to a junction, and it would have an adverse impact on visual amenity."
