AN arts project, which is bringing together mature people to enjoy the arts, is expanding its activities in Halton.

Years Ahead, a project run by elders for elders, is offering specifically tailored classes and workshops in dance, creative writing and textile arts.

Run by the Halton Elders Arts Group, Years Ahead has been running for three years at Grangeway Community Centre.

Now, thanks to funding from the North West Arts Lottery Programme and Halton Council, the selection of classes has been widened and a series of taster sessions is taking place at residential homes and at existing groups over the coming weeks.

In response to feedback from those already involved in Years Ahead, free transport is now being provided and there are plans to run classes at Ditton Community Centre, Widnes, for the first time from January 2002.

Bernard Roads, chairman of the Halton Elders Arts Group, said: "My motto is that ordinary people can do extraordinary things'."

Cllr Pat Tyrell, executive board member for education and lifelong learning, said: "This is a fantastic project which proves that it is never too late to learn."

Years Ahead takes place at Grangeway Community Centre, Runcorn, from 10am to 12.30pm on Thursdays.

There is a £1 per session charge.
