Barnton 3 Poynton 2 (aet; full-time 1-1)

Mid Cheshire League Cup

BARNTON needed an extra half hour to finally get into their stride and secure their place in the next round of the League Cup on Saturday.

They went behind in the seventh minute to a Jimmy Williams strike, and had to rely on a penalty to pull them back into the tie.

This arrived on 57 minutes when Gareth Langley was fouled on the edge of the box and David Dale stepped up to convert his fourth spot-kick of the season.

After struggling to force a sustained period of pressure, Barnton suddenly sprang into life in the opening five minutes of extra-time, scoring twice to seemingly wrap up the game.

In the 91st minutes, Will Hurley netted after coming on as sub for the second week running, and Dale scored his second with a firece shot three minutes later.

Poynton made a fight of it right until the last, however, and Wayne Dybus smashed in a direct free-kick in the 116th minute.

It was then left to Derrick Fortune to keep tired Barnton ahead with a superb last gasp save at the feet of a Poynton forward.

More cup football awaits Barnton this Saturday when they begin their Cheshire Amateur FA Cup campaign with a visit to West Kirby.

Barnton: Fortune, Starchievski, Fraser, Murray, Gee, Brodigan, Killey, Dale, Hennin, Langley (Hurley 76), Tomlinson (Capper 81).
