A 35-YEAR-OLD Northwich woman is refusing to be beaten by terrorism after deciding to take part in this year's New York marathon.

Despite the horrific terrorist attacks which devastated parts of the Big Apple two weeks ago, Sandra Connolly will put her best foot forward during the 26.2 mile race in November.

Sandra, a building control officer for Vale Royal Borough Council, had been training for months in anticipation of her first marathon event.

But she thought her dream trip would understandably have to be cancelled following the devastating attacks on the World Trade Center.

However the New York Road Runner Club, which organises the event, has said on its website the race will take place as scheduled on November 4.

And Sandra believes the club has decided to go ahead with the marathon to show that terrorism cannot win and as a tribute to the thousands who lost their lives when the planes were deliberately crashed into the twin towers.

"I'm not really worried about flying there," she said.

"But I have been nervous about doing the marathon anyway so I'm a bit concerned about what's happening in Afghanistan and what reprisals it may have.

"I hadn't been planning to seek sponsorship for the run but if any colleagues or friends want to sponsor me I will share the money between the fund for the relatives of the attack, and the NSPCC Full Stop Campaign."

Sandra is now running 18 miles in a training session and is confident that by the big day she will have enough stamina and determination to run the distance.

"I am not looking at any special finishing time," she said. "I will just be happy to complete the course."

Her trip to New York is only for five days and she had been planning to go sightseeing, but is now hoping to attend a service in the city for the terror attack victims.

The marathon was due to pass through all five districts of the city and a new route away from the devastated area will have to be plotted.

Anyone who wants to sponsor Sandra is welcome to fill in a form from the reception desk at the borough council offices, Wyvern House, The Drumber, Winsford.
