PARANOID schizophrenic Glynn Harding has been ordered to be detained indefinitely after conducting a "terrifying" letter bomb campaign.

Judge Elgan Edwards told Harding his actions were "pure evil," and also said that he would have sent him to prison for life had it not been for his medical condition.

Harding, 27, of Minshull New Road, Crewe, will be detained under the Mental Health Act at a specialist clinic.

Harding told police his wife had suffered a miscarriage the year before the letter bomb campaign.

He subsequently heard voices saying he would need to send 100 packages so his baby, who was in hell, would go to heaven.

He pleaded guilty to 16 charges of sending explosive devices in the post, 12 of sending an explosive substance, three of causing injury by explosives and one of having an explosive device.

He started sending the letter bombs last December, at random to organisations with a connection with animals.

He learned how to make the explosives from books and the internet.

Three people were injured by exploding letter bombs, including six-year-old Leah Cain, from Church Lawton.

She suffered leg and feet injuries when opening a parcel at her parent's home in January.

Other targets were a fish and chip shop in Holywell and Cancer Research shop in Lytham St Annes.

A woman from Humberside lost the sight in one eye when opening one of the letter bombs.

Harding was eventually caught in Crewe when he was spotted by police putting parcels into post boxes while wearing gloves.
