THE completion of the £5 million town centre improvements has been delayed after the shipping of some of the artwork from the States was held up.

The official opening of the new-look streets was due to take place during the weekend of October 20 and 21, but because of the hold ups, this has been postponed indefinitely.

The controversial artworks, which will feature bronze and granite columns as well as a water and light feature, hit the headlines when the Guardian revealed that American artist Howard Ben Tre had been employed at great expense.

Many people asked why the work could not have been designed by a more local artist and questioned the high cost of the changes.

And although work is well on its way in Warrington with tree planting, new paving and the creation of a raised area at Market Gate, the problems have originated in America.

A council spokesman said: "Unfortunately it has proved necessary to postpone the opening event.

"Delays have occurred in the shipping from the USA of some elements of the artworks.

"Although the items in themselves are small, they are an integral part of the final look of the new town centre and it was felt that such an important day should be complete in every way.

"Whilst many arrangements had still to be made, some groups, organisations and individuals had been invited to take part and we apologise for any inconvenience to them.

"We must stress this is only a postponement of what will be a very enjoyable and important day."
