CONCERNS are being raised over a planning application by telecommunications giant Hutchinson 3G UK Ltd to site a mobile phone mast in Birchwood.

The proposed 20-metre lattice tower, which would contain three antennas and three transmission dishes, along with an equipment cabin, would be sited off Garrett Field, on the edge of Birchwood Park business estate.

But residents say that there is no need to build the giant tower as there are already high structures nearby which they feel would be able to house the telecommunications equipment.

And they also raise familiar concerns about the possible health effects of such masts.

One couple, who live in neighbouring Delenty Drive, have already made their written objections to the borough council.

In their letter, they say: "The proposed location is highly visible within Birchwood and would cause a significant loss of visual amenity.

"There is no need to construct a freestanding lattice tower in order to support antennas as there are several nearby structures which would provide support without creating an eyesore. Examples are the adjacent office blocks and the mast of the footbridge over Birchwood Park Avenue."

And they also say that other concerns should be taken into account.

"The proposed site is close to residential areas," the letter adds.

"There are reasonable grounds for concern that radio frequency transmissions may be harmful to people close to the transmitter. In the absence of evidence that such transmissions are safe, the precautionary principle' should be followed."

The deadline for interested parties' written representations about the plans is Thursday, October 4. The plans can be viewed at the development control department at New Town House, Buttermarket Street.
