HORSE riders in Burtonwood are taking to the saddle in support of a campaign to reduce the number of accidents involving horses and riders on the roads.

On Saturday, October 13, around 20 people will be taking part in the national Riding for Road Safety event, an initiative organised by Horse magazine, Horse and Hound and the British Horse Society to help make the roads a safer place for horses and riders.

According to Cathy Mitchell, British Horse Society district representative for Warrington and Halton, it's all about gaining a better understanding between motorists and riders.

She said: "We want to work with motorists to try to make the roads a safer place for everyone.

"Tragically, six riders have been killed this year in accidents with motor vehicles.

"As well as highlighting our safety concerns to motorists, the road safety campaign is very much about urging horse riders to behave correctly on the roads too."

On-foot supporters will be handing out campaign flyers on the day to motorists they meet along the route of the ride.

Anyone interested in taking part on the day can call Cathy on 226632.
