MERSEY Regional Ambulance Service (MRAS) has appointed its first medical director, Dr Edward Tunn.

A consultant at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital Trust, Dr Tunn will take up the part-time position with MRAS, which includes Warrington, on October 1.

Dr Tunn said: "I am delighted to accept the post because I think I can make a positive contribution to the development and high standards of the service due to my experience in incident management and training in pre-hospital care matters."

He has worked with MRAS in preparation for the forthcoming first responder schemes to be used in rural areas, where trained members of the public are used to respond to life threatening calls before an ambulance can - helping to save more lives.

Acting chief executive, Paul Bradshaw, added: "We are sure Dr Tunn will use his range of skills to maximum effect in maintaining the Trust as a top performer among British ambulance services."

Dr Tunn, who lives in West Kirby, was welcomed to the job at the recent MRAS annual general meeting by Dr Robin Macmillan, who previously advised the trust on clinical matters.
