Anselmians....23 Crewe & Nantwich....13

GOING down to Anselmians on the Wirral by a goal, 2 tries and 2 penalty goals to 2 tries and a penalty showed that while Crewe have the frame-work of a sound side their game is strewn with errors with them seemingly losing games rather than the opposition winning them.

The giving away of a host of penalties by the front row, trying to run the ball from behind their own 25 metre line instead of a simple clearance kick and then kicking away possession when in a favourable position, are just a few of the frustrating parts of their play.

A spate of penalties in the first 25 minutes saw Anselmians 6 points to 3 ahead with Crewe very much on the defensive but a foray up field with Crewe winning a 5 metre scrum gave Gavin Cowan the opportunity to dive over for a try.

The lead was short lived with a try for the home side just before half time.

The Anselmians' three-quarter line were certainly more than lively and their 2 second-half tries were just reward but with Crewe dominant in the forwards they should never have had so many opportunities.

Kevin Naughton scored another try from the forward department but with the talent Crewe have in their centres there must be a way found to give them quick ball.

Next week Crewe have their first league game at home when they meet St Mary's Old Boys - kick off at 3pm.
