THOSE living in rural areas are being urged to do their bit for the environment by sharing car journeys.

The council is to target 35,000 homes in a leafleting campaign using money from the DTLR's Rural Bus Challenge.

The aim of the initiative is to reduce traffic and therefore protect and enhance the environment by cutting exhaust emissions.

The pamphlet contains all the information that is needed to set up a car-sharing scheme.

This works by one or more people who have similar journey patterns or who live near each other travelling to work together and sharing the cost of the journey.

The council is to set up a database of participants across Warrington so that the information potential car-sharers need is readily available.

Environment committee chairman John Joyce said: "There are some major environmental benefits to car sharing and we are hoping as many individuals and companies as possible sign up to this scheme."
