DATEN SURPRISE WINNERS

DATEN Hockey Club's women's team were surprise winners of the annual Newton Seven-a-Side Tournament on Sunday.

The team went into the competition as underdogs but went through the competition undefeated, scoring 10 goals and conceding only two along the way.

Solid, hard work from the whole team shone through, particularly in the last and crucial match against Runcorn when they pushed hard to get the winner in the dying minutes. Jo Nordovics battled hard to earn a corner and a blistering strike from Kathryn Edwards, her third of the day, sealed the game and the tournament.

Other tournament goals were scored by Sacha Hately, three; Nicky Buckney, two, Nordovics, Emily Grimshaw.

The previous day Daten had lost 3-1 in a friendly at Neston, although the turning point was losing key defender Anne Parker with a broken foot in the second half. The score had been 1-1 up until that point.

Daten's first half goal came about when a deflected strike from Edwards was encouraged over the line by Buckney.

Performances of the day came from Jo William, Kate Parr and Hately.

Daten's women's team are seeking an umpire for the forthcoming season. Anyone who is interested should contact Dawn Harrington on 826384.

Any new players who would like to join the men's or women's teams should also contact Dawn on the above number.

EXTRA TIME HEARTBREAK

WARRINGTON women's hockey team gave a higher placed Cheshire League side a fright in the weekend's cup game.

Warrington only went out to Alderley Edge 2-1 after an extra time goal.

Warrington had the best of the play and took the lead through an Hollie Acklam goal.

This lead held firm until the last minute when Warrington conceded a penalty corner and then an equalising goal to force 20 minutes of extra time. Alderley lasted the pace strongly to steal the cup tie.

Warrington's young second string lost 9-1 at home to Runcorn's first team but the scoreline does not do Warrington justice. For the first 15 minutes Runcorn did not get the ball out of their own half.

Charlotte Meachin scored Warrington's only goal on her debut for the club.

Runcorn unanimously decided that young goalkeeper Hollie Platt was the player of the match.Hollie will be going to the second round of selection trials for the Cheshire Schoolgirl under 14 development squad on Sunday.

Hockey training takes place at Broomfields Leisure centre on Wednesdays at 730pm. All players are welcome to attend.
