EXTRA security measures are still in place at Manchester Airport this week after the atrocities in America.

Yesterday (Tuesday) the airport remained on high alert after hijackers crashed two passenger jets into the World Trade Center in New York.

"Security has always been strong at the airport," said a spokesman.

"But additional security measures were put in place quickly and as far as we are aware they have remained in place."

Queues still remain at the security desks and passengers have been following guidelines put in place.

"Most passengers acknowledge the need for introducing the extra measures," she said.

"They are following our guidelines by keeping hand luggage to a minimum and putting all other luggage onto the plane."

Security has been stepped up at airports across the country since the atrocities in New York.

A Manchester Airport spokesman said they always had a police presence, but people would be noticing it more from now on.

"Police are a common sight at the airport because we have our own police station here," she said.

"There has always been a police presence but perhaps people are noticing it more in light of what has happened in America. I think they feel safer knowing that the police are there."
