NO-ONE will be charged with the murder of Jody Burns unless fresh evidence becomes available.
Det Insp Mike Caton said: "A thorough investigation took place after Mr Burns' death and it is clear that he was attacked.
"However, the evidence so far is not enough for murder charges to go ahead - and this will not happen unless we have any new information."
Mr Burns, 27, died on June 15 after being involved in a series of disturbances on High Street in Runcorn earlier that day.
Several fights broke out between 12.30am - 1.30am and a number of people were injured and received hospital treatment. Several arrests were also made.
CCTV cameras in High Street failed to record the fracas that led to Mr Burns' death. Since the investigation was launched officers took statements from more than 260 witnesses.
After consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service, a number of men have been charged with public order offences. They are on bail to appear before Halton Magistrates Court in late November.
A Police Spokesman said: "There is no evidence to suggest that Jody Burns was behaving in an aggressive or violent way, he was an innocent victim of the violent behaviour of others. No one has been charged with causing the injuries that led to Jody's death and the police file is still open."
