Widnes Colts 22 Preston 10

WIDNES took 25 minutes to get going in this match but forwards Smith, Hewlett, Lamb and Wilmington finally started to lead Widnes' attacks.

Cookson and Cooke both proved a thorn in the opposition's side, Leedham started to shine, and line out men in Godwin, Hodgson, Lochnane and Wallace were all superb. O'Neill found his kicking boots and Foran and Keeley deserve a mention.

WIDNES entertained their old adversaries despite being light on players due to illness and school holidays.

Andy Riley and Matty Buckle turned up for duty despite a 24 hour coach journey from the south of France the previous day.

The visitors' forwards powered over for a well taken try but the home team drew level by the half time when Neil Liu broke clear to score.

The Wids forwards took control in the second half and Liu was on the end of two, free flowing moves to complete his hat trick.

Andy White, supporting a break by Danny Woods, reached over for the last try.

WIDNES scored first through Justin Winstanley but Vale then raced to a 38-7 lead.

Widnes swapped and changed the side around to try and counter Vale's forward strength and finally got the combination right when Winstanley moved into the forwards.

Winstanley clawed back four tries, all converted by Ian Dennett, but it was not enough to rescue the game. Shaun Newall tackled well and was supported by Gavin Hatton.

THE Wids continued their unbeaten run and demonstrated their defensive and offensive abilities.

Lang opened the scoring when he ripped the ball from the opposition and charged over and Anderson got the second.

Lang then sliced through the defence for his second and Oliver sold an excellent dummy to score before feeding Nelson who put the Wids 25-0 up at the break.

Lang used his awesome strength to score two more tries and also released Schofield who finished with aplomb. Anderson grabbed two more for his hat trick and Schofield coasted through for his brace before Haddad unselfishly fed Simons to go over in the corner.

WIDNES U9s travelled 70 miles away for a tough encounter and played two games one after the other.

Wids ran in seven tries in the first game with only a single reply from the shell-shocked opposition.

The Wids passing and driving made sure that they owned the ball for the majority of the game and crashing tackles and controlled driving was also a feature of their play.

The second game went again in the Wids favour with a six-try tally unanswered by the final whistle.

Both sides slowed as the pace took its toll but the Wids showed their mettle and again emerged as victors.

Team: Atkin, Buckle, Brownbill, Glover, Doolan, Knight, Morris, Phillips, Shaw, Stewart (c), Thompson.

WIDNES dominated play from the start and the young team members demonstrated some good ball handling and impressive awareness of the game.

Lang and Oliver both scored two tries with the most spectacular coming when the two played a dummy scissors manoeuvre, allowing Oliver to score whilst Lang led the pack away.

Oliver to complete his hat trick whilst Lang pounced on a loose ball to claim possession and proceeded to score his fourth try.

Kenyon overcame the strong opposition to dive over after strong support from Stewart and Critchley, and Batterton also produced two tries.

West Bank U16s 29 Barrow Walney Island 6

(National Cup First Round)

WEST Bank travelled to Barrow with a squad of just 14, but what a performance from each player.

The Bank set the pace after only eight minutes when Ian Wilkinson scored the first of his hat trick of tries, each one as brilliant as the other.

The Bank were up to the high tempo of the game and crunching tackles slowed their opposition down.

Neil Karalius scored a brilliant try as he followed up his own clever little kick through and he also converted the tries and kicked a drop goal.

There were more superb tries from Jake Micheals and David Allen and although the opposition did get a consolation try, they were just never allowed into the game.

Joint top tacklers were Stephen Nash and Peter Ramanouski and M.O.M awards went to Jake Micheals, Ian Wilkinson and David Allen.

West Bank's coaching staff would like to thank the whole team for a superb performance and the parents who travelled to Barrow and supported the lads.

Wid Moorfield U11s 24 West Bank Bears U11s 14

A LARGE crowd witnessed an excellent game of rugby league when the towns two top sides met.

Moorfield took the lead when Dean French and Paul Worth took play deep into the Bears' half and allowed Danny Nelson to go over for an excellent try.

Big drives from Richard Bamber and Darren Clark paved the way for Jack Topping to race 40 yards for a fine try, which he converted himself to extend his team's lead to 10-0.

Moorfield's Gareth Jones, Rob Conroy and Lee Brill turned in good performances and were well on top and Jack Topping scored his second try of the match to give the home side a 14-0 lead at the break.

West Bank started the second half in a more determined mood, with Tunstead, Hulme and Smith testing the Moorfield line, and only good defence from Jack Platt, Charlotte Stringman and Chris Hayes kept the Bears at bay.

Adam Campbell finished off a good move to get West Bank onto the score sheet and the visitors started to take control of the game with Sean Attwood touching down and converted his own try to bring the Bears back in to the game at 14-10.

Moorfield were stung into action and an excellent move between Danny Nelson and the impressive Jake Fraser allowed the latter to score under the posts with Hayes adding the conversion.

But the Bears would not lie down and Craig Lawton ran onto a ball and scattered the Moorfield defence to score a well deserved try.

In the closing minutes John Dempsey and Tommy Seimainanouski took play to within five yards of the visitors' line and from the play-the-ball Adam Prendergast burst through two would-be tacklers to score a fine individual try and give the home side a deserved win.

M.O.M was Jack Topping, closely followed by Danny Nelson and Adam Prendergast.

West Bank Bears U12s 36 Pilkingtons U12s 18

(North West Counties Cup First Round)

THE Bears were put to the test in this cup competition and Pilk's forwards looked impressive as they powered forward forcing West Bank to tackle hard.

The score was 12-12 at the break and the second half performance by both teams produced more point for point scoring.

Some dubious refereeing decisions frustrated the Bears but they kept fighting and tackling with all their might and at full time the teams were tied at 18-18.

In true cup style the Bears launching a full-scale attack in extra time and quick hands gave "rocket" Rob Holbrook a try and the Bears the lead.

West Bank refused to give Pilks any ground, and Jake Bourke and Dave Jones weaved their way through the disillusioned Pilks defence. Jones gave forward Tom Woods an excellent pass allowing him to cross for his first try of the game.

This was another good display from West Bank and their grit and determination coupled with a strong will to win paid dividends in the end.

Well done again boys. M.O.M, Rob Holbrook and top tackler, Tom Wood.

B'brook Royals U13s 14 Wid St Marie's U13s 10

BLACKBROOK Royals were out for revenge and took advantage of a weak Marie's side, which had several players missing.

The Royal struck first by scoring a try and although Marie's fought back with two tries through Alex Parc-Rollac, Blackbrook brought the scores level and then went ahead soon after with another try.

In the last 10 minutes Maries surged ahead to regain the lead but disorganised play and lacklustre performance led to a miserable defeat.
