Widnes Albion Bulls 20 Bold Miners 14

THE Albion gained two well-earned points in a game that should have been put out of reach of the visitors, but ill discipline crept in and a series of penalties kept Bold on the attack and the Albion under pressure.

Things started off well enough when Andy Benson opened the scoring taking the ball as first receiver and pounding 35 yards to go under the posts.

New signing, Lee Birdseye, back at the club after a foray into the professional ranks, landed the conversion.

A second successful kick put the Albion 8-0 ahead and Bold were rarely seen as an attacking force until a penalty in the last minute of the half made the interval score 8-2.

Bold equalised in the early stages of the second half when their prop barged over but the Albion raised their game and Benson charged 50 yards for his second try to be followed shortly after by Andy Lee who was unstoppable from short range.

Birdseye converted both tries and at 20-8 the Albion seemed home and dry, but indiscipline set in and put the home defence under severe pressure.

Bold only managed to score one converted try and the Albion hung on for a deserved two points but must learn the lesson not to argue with the man in the middle as it could cost you in the end.

The Albion Bulls are away to Latchford Albion this week; as they had to move up the table, kick off 2pm at Victoria Park, Warrington.
