ORGANISERS of Winsford Carnival have revealed the first details of this year's event.

The ambitious carnival committee is determined to make the event the best the town has seen and has started by moving the event from Saturday to a Sunday for the first time.

The reason for the move is to make the procession more spectacular as there will be more bands and troupes available.

But the carnival cannot be complete without a queen and that is why one of the first priorities is to select the retinue.

The selection will be held on Sunday, February 3 at DB's in Market Place, Winsford.

Girls who live in the CW7 area will be considered and should fit into the following age groups.

Fairy Queen, ages five to seven, Rose Queen, ages eight to 10, Princess and court, for 11 and 12-year-olds and the Queen and her attendants should be aged between 13 and 16.

The judges would like to emphasise that the queen is required to represent the town on Saturdays and Sundays.

The newly elected carnival committee, chaired by Peter Beetham, has put forward July 14 as a suggested date for the carnival.

Like last year the carnival will have music and a bar at Verdin field with Budweiser increasing its sponsorship of the event.

The committee is also considering ways to fund the carnival with some events already organised and others in the pipeline.

One of the fund-raising methods the committee has put forward is the reintroduction of a nominal admission fee to the field.

A carnival spokesman said: "The enthusiasm, ideas and drive of the new committee has fuelled a belief that this year's carnival will be a spectacle to match the greatest carnivals Winsford has seen.

"This is especially appropriate in the year of the Queen's golden jubilee."

The committee is stressing that Winsford Carnival is for the people and its members want to hear feedback from the residents.

To that note the public are welcome to its monthly meetings, the details of which will be published in the Guardian in the coming weeks.
