FOLLOWING a sell-out run at The London Palladium, the lavish award-winning production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's The King and I is coming to Manchester's Opera House in May.

Ronobir Lahiri, who understudied to the King on the London stage, will ascend the throne to play the lead as King Mongjut.

Meanwhile the starring role of Anna Leonowens, played in the West End by Josie Lawrence, will be played by Stephanie Powers.

Set in the early 1860s in the Royal capital city of Bangkok in the Kingdom of Siam, The King And I is a story of love and joy with unforgettable songs such as Shall We Dance? I Whistle A Happy Tune, Hello Young Lovers, Getting To Know You, I Have Dreamed and Something Wonderful.

Lavish murals, mirrored tiles, beading, jewels, silks, 30ft bejewelled elephants, three miles of gold tiling and a red stage will all be recreated especially for the UK tour.

The show is already selling out and will play at the Opera House from May 21 to June 29 and tickets can be booked on the Ticketmaster 24 hour booking line on 0161 242 2524, subject to a booking fee.
