PUBLIC feedback over the borough's cemeteries has highlighted a major concern of visitors.

Response to questionnaires and surveys has revealed distress over the number of people who use the facilities just to exercise their pets.

Borough mayor, Cllr Terry Beard has led pleas for dog owners to act in a responsible manner.

"Every effort has been made within the council's cemeteries to create a tranquil and peaceful environment," he said. "A place where people can go for quiet reflection.

"It is disturbing therefore to find that there are a few selfish people spoiling this by purposely exercising their dogs within the grounds."

Cllr Doug Butterill added:

"We do not want to have to ban dogs as we realise many visitors rely on their pets for companionship and security.

I would ask visitors to ensure their pets are on a lead and if fouling does occur, that they clean up and dispose of the waste responsibly."

The council has the power to impose a maximum fine of £1,000 for dog owners who do not clean up after their pets.
