A SPECIAL project has been launched within the borough to help reduce accidents in the home.

Two council houses at 86 and 88 Timbrell Avenue, Crewe, are currently being transformed into a specialist centre that will raise awareness of home safety matters.

'Safe as Houses' is managed by Anchor Staying Put and partners in the scheme include the borough council, Cheshire Fire Brigade, Cheshire Police and Age Concern.

The scheme has been designed to offer residents, carers or local service providers of all ages, first hand interactive experience of basic home safety measures.

It also aims to provide special help for those living in the West End, particularly the elderly and the vulnerable, on accident prevention, personal safety and home security.

All partners have provided funding to match that from the North West Development Agency (NWDA), which is currently supporting the redevelopment of the West End.

The facility will also be a useful information point offering practical help and advice to anyone who wants to avoid accidents in the home.

Due to open in the summer, the Safe as Houses project is looking to recruit volunteers to assist in its daily running.
