Helsby 1 Shell 2 (West Cheshire Div One)

HELSBY'S poor run of form continued as they slumped to their fourth successive defeat in a 2-1 reverse at the hands of Shell in WCL Division One.

The villagers' injury list lengthened before kick off with strike duo Gary Tyrrell and Lee Hunt, scorers of 38 goals this season, Geoff Tan and 'keeper Dave Green all joining Russ Whitehead on the sidelines.

The first half was a scrappy affair as both sides failed to carve out any real clear-cut opportunities.

But the visitors went ahead on 30 minutes when Dave Nethercott was dispossessed on the halfway line and the Shell striker ran unchallenged to score past stand in 'keeper Kevin Bradshaw.

Helsby failed to improve after the interval and it was always Shell that looked more likely to extend their lead.

The goal came with 20 minutes remaining after a swift Shell attack down the left was headed past Bradshaw from close range.

Helsby's woes increased when Tony Lunt was dismissed for a professional foul, but this seemed to fire the villagers up and the home side pulled a goal back through Dave McKinlay, who finished well from 15 yards after good work by Mike Smith.

Helsby now threw everything forward and were unlucky not to be awarded a penalty when McKinlay was tripped from behind in the Shell box. He stayed on his feet only to see his shot blocked.

Helsby won a series of corner kicks in the last two minutes, but could not convert them and Shell held out for the three points.

Helsby entertain league leaders Christleton on Saturday; kick off 2.15pm while Helsby Reserves visit Division Three leaders Maghull Reserves.
