A LOWTON woman has made history by becoming the first female Asian president of Manchester's junior chamber of commerce.

Ashi Arora, aged 33, takes up her new role in a special year for the city as it prepares to host the Commonwealth games.

The legal executive, from Heathmoor Road, has been a proactive member of the chamber since 1993, and has risen through the ranks over the past nine years.

Her inauguration was hosted by law firm Davis Blank Furniss where she practices.

Guests included past presidents of the junior chamber and the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Manchester.

And Ashi's appointment also marks a family double, as her sister Bela becomes the president of Birmingham junior chamber of commerce.

During her year as president, Ashi hopes to swell the chamber's membership and encourage others to practice her own personal motto - broaden your horizons.

She said: "Manchester has undergone a miraculous transformation following the bombing and has built on its rich heritage reflecting its passion for sport, music and the arts.

"I am delighted that my year as president coincides with the Commonwealth Games and the Queen's jubilee celebrations.

"Not only is it an exciting time, but there will also be many challenges to ensure the success of these prestigious events, in addition to representing the junior chamber at local, national and international level."
