As a lifelong Wire fan since the Brian Bevan days you can imagine my joy on hearing the great news of the stadium being given the go ahead.

Such joy was slightly soured by press reports that, once again, the preying Sale RUFC now want to piggy-back a stadium sharing arrangement but, in their spokesman's words, "as long as it suits Sale RUFC". Where were these people over the past 18 months when this town campaigned for the stadium decision? This is the same spokesman who, only a couple of weeks ago, dismissed St Helens RLFC coach Ian Millward's interest in one of their backs, by reminding everyone that "the player in question had no interest in rugby league whatsoever - he went to a grammar school"! I can't understand that comment as I went to a rugby union-playing grammar school but in no way did it negate my interest in the 13- a-side code. Sadly, some things don't change, and, despite the advent of professionalism in the union code, the old bigotry lives on. While economics might make it inevitable that Sale do share the people's stadium I would ask that the custodians of Warrington RLFC ensure that the Wolves are primary users and that the stadium signage reflects it, together with the 100 years or more of history that this club has contributed to the town. Sale should play there courtesy of the Wolves, its supporters and "as long as it suits Warrington RLFC".
