CAF society is set to come to Dallam as plans to create a trendy, young caf bar get underway, transforming Harrison Square into a prime location for new traders

And the renovation project is set to enlist the efforts of all sections of the community; working in partnership with the very youngsters that it is hoped will use it.

A planning application has been submitted to the council's development control committee for the change of use of former hairdressers on Harrison Square to a caf bar, serving hot and cold drinks and quick snacks.

Young people in the community will play a major part in renovating the shop, gaining skills in building and decorating while creating a focal point for younger residents of Dallam.

The revamp is the brainchild of hairdresser Rieta Ollier, who plans to relocate her business above the caf. She has enlisted support from the wider community including ward councillor Mick Hill who has helped draw up plans for the design of the caf.

The new venture is just a small part of a major redevelopment plan, which will see new traders opening in premises on the Square.

And the changing rooms theme of the renovation has already captured the attention of young people who are keen to submit ideas for development and design.

Clr Mick Hill said: "At the moment we're looking at space age designs for the back room and a pop culture theme for the caf - something that will attract people. While the caf will be designed with young people in mind and in partnership with them, it'll also be open to everyone in the community to call in for a drink and a chat. Youths round here often feel frustrated that there is a lack of facilities for them."

He added: "I am confident that something like this will really take off round here, especially since the same young people who are helping create and renovate it are the ones that will be using it. That way they'll be gaining skills as well as a new facility."

The community are looking for any form of sponsorship or help with materials for the caf. If you can help, call Clr Mick Hill on 573663.
