SPEED limits are to drop to 30 mph throughout almost the whole of Croft after proposals were given unanimous approval by the borough council's traffic committee.

But due to a council mistake, one stretch of Wigshaw Lane is to remain as a 40 mph zone, as it was missed off the initial scheme.

Proposals to reduce the speed on this road are now to be formally advertised, along with a second section of rural highway in Stonepit Lane and Sandy Brow Lane, after a resident raised concerns over the sharp bends there.

The speed limit changes have come about after extensive consultation with Croft residents and a concerted campaign by the village's parish council.

Public exhibitions were held, attracting around 180 people, and the council received only one objection, from a Culcheth resident, who was against the speeds being dropped.

However, council officers pointed out that dropping the speed by 10 mph would add only 30 seconds to motorists' journey times, yet would give a giant boost to road safety.

High visibility 'gateway' features will accompany the changes. These will include red roundels on the road surface and prominent signs to highlight to motorists that they are entering a 30 mph zone.

Ward councillor Les Hoyle, who is also a parish councillor, said: "I'm delighted that this scheme has been approved.

"But it is sad that some parts have been left out after lots of effort from all those involved.

"As well as the people in Croft, a tremendous number of people from Culcheth have written to me to say that they agree with the plans."
