WARRINGTON Wolves are set to spring a selection surprise when they play their final trial match against Salford at Wilderspool tomorrow, Friday.

Papua New Guinean scrum half Tom O'Reilly is expected to be given the nod to play full back as a replacement for Lee Briers.

Great Britain international Briers will be rested because of injury although he will be fit for the club's start in the Kellogg's Nutri-Grain Challenge Cup, which has its fourth round draw on Monday.

Briers, who is performance director Steve Anderson's first choice goal kicker, looks certain to start the season at full back.

Anderson has the option of orthodox full backs Lee Penny, David Alstead and Leon Felton in his 27-man squad but Alstead and Felton look set for wing runs this year while Penny has been pencilled alongside David Kidwell for a centre spot against Salford.

O'Reilly had been expected to figure this year at half back, hooker, back row or in the centres but it would appear that he is Briers' deputy at full back for a certain style of game that Anderson and his first team coach David Plange are planning to use.

The style involves the full back having a pivotal role in attack. Briers or O'Reilly would be playing like an additional stand off and both have considerable experience in that department.

Only time will tell if Briers or O'Reilly have the sound defensive and kick-clearing qualities that are a feature of an orthodox full back's play.

With Briers absent on Friday, the goal-kicking duties will be handed to skipper Matt Rodwell or fit-again Rob Smyth, who may start his first game of the year on the wing.

Academy product Steve Maden and new signing Dale Laughton are set to make their first starts for the first team.

Anderson named this Wolves team to face Salford, kick-off 7.30pm:

Lee Briers/Tom O'Reilly; Kevin Crouthers/David Alstead, Steve Maden, David Kidwell/Lee Penny, Leon Felton/Rob Smyth; Sid Domic, Matt Rodwell; Mark Hilton, Mark Gleeson/Jon Clarke, Dale Laughton, Dean Busby, Jerome Guisset/Paul Noone/Matt Sturm, Darren Burns.
