POVERTY-stricken youngsters in Warrington are set to receive a £310,000 cash boost this year to help those at risk of social deprivation.

The money, part of the Government's £70 million Local Network Funding, will go towards children aged up to 19, in a scheme launched by the Chancellor of the Exchequer in May 2001.

This innovative new grant will be of benefit to both local community and volunteer groups, focusing upon youngsters' aspirations and experiences to help them achieve long-term goals and to help less privileged families who are continually forced to survive on low incomes.

The project also targets isolated children who have difficulty accessing services and gives a voice to young people who are often suppressed and discouraged from expressing opinions.

Helen Jones, Warrington North MP, backed the financial promises, saying: "Local Network funding is a way of supporting local and volunteer efforts as part of the wider effort against child poverty. Our allocation is great news for local groups and the young people who will benefit from the money.

"Local groups should apply for a grant of between £250 and £7,000 under one of the four themes by telephoning 0845 1130 161, for information and an application pack."

The new Local Network Fund is twinned with the £380 million Children's Fund pinpointing youngsters at an earlier age before they get into social difficulties.
