SCHOOLS across Warrington are preparing to take a step back in time as they join a national day commemorating the events of the Holocaust.
Holocaust Memorial Day will be held this Sunday, with hundreds of activities across the country to raise awareness and understanding of the appalling events of the Holocaust, and Warrington will be joining in.
To mark the day, primary, infant, junior and special schools across the borough have been sent a book called 'Our Lonely Journey', to help them teach about the Holocaust through the historical accounts of those who suffered.
Secondary schools have been sent a video called 'Survivors', a short presentation featuring four Holocaust survivors, who give an insight into their lives and experiences.
Clr Paul Ross, chairman of the education and lifelong learning committee, said: "The children will be undertaking a variety of projects over the coming weeks using the material we have provided them.
"It is important that the children learn about historical events, such as this, so that they can learn about children of their own age, how they lived during the Holocaust and relate this to how things have changed."
Holocaust Memorial Day was set up to provide a national mark of respect for all victims of Nazi persecution and demonstrate understanding with all those who still suffer its consequences.
