OLYMPIC cyclist Emma Davies will prepare for the Commonwealth Games with a gruelling 14-day race in America.

Her dad John Davies said the difficult road race would be perfect training for his daughter, who will go for gold at Manchester's Velodrome in July.

"Emma stands a good chance of winning a medal at the Games," he said. "But she needs to work hard in the run-up to the competition and the race in America is a difficult course that will build her up nicely."

Emma, who was crowned world number one women's cyclist last year, spent New Year at home in Lower Peover but is now back in training in Spain.

"She'll be there for 10 days before she comes back home for more training," said Mr Davies. "In February she's off to America for eight weeks where she should get some good races under her belt."

In April Emma will compete in the World Championship qualifiers in Mexico. "That's an important one for her but she's done it before and I'm sure she'll do well again," said her dad. "She's on top form at the moment."

Before returning to America for the road race in May, 22-year-old Emma will compete in street races in France and Majorca to prepare for the Games.

"Last year was good for Emma but we're hoping this year will be even better," said Mr Davies. "She's very strong now. It could be her best year yet."

Emma will compete in Commonwealth Games women's points race on July 30 at the National Cycling Centre in Manchester.
