BOROUGH councillors have warned developers that the decision to grant planning permission for a new Tesco is not a gateway for other similar stores in the town.

Councillors discussed a report into the planning inspector's decision to approve a joint planning application for the Tesco supermarket and a new stadium for Warrington Wolves following a public inquiry.

The report stated that without the stadium plans, there would have been "no chance" of permission for the superstore being granted.

The inspector said that the final decision was a finely balanced one and that implications for the community outweighed the objections identified to the store.

John Earle, the council's assistant director of planning and regeneration, said that the inspector's conclusions largely mirrored those of the development control committee when it originally agreed to pass the plans.

"I do not think this is a gateway for other retailers to come into Warrington," he said.
