TWO Appleton sisters have teamed up with top sporting stars this week to raise funds for Cancer Research - in memory of their mother, who last year died from the illness.

Hetty Roach, aged five, who attends Cobbs Infant School, raffled a Manchester United soccer shirt, amassing more than £2,000 for the charity, to help raise cancer awareness after her mum Lisa died in October 2001.

The Appleton school held a children's fashion show, with the help of clothes company Togs on the Move, allowing pupils to model the latest trends to parents and friends.

Hetty's sister, nine-year-old Lily Roach, recently auctioned an England shirt at Broomfields Junior School, which was autographed after the national side's crucial win over Greece, when David Beckham's last-gasp free-kick ensured World Cup qualification.

Marie Brooks, head teacher at Cobbs Infants, said: "The raffle was held at the end of the fashion show, to make it more high-profile.

"It was a very successful event, and we're glad to be able to contribute to such a worthy cause. I've thanked everybody involved for their hard work, at a school assembly."

Kathy Bianchi, secretary, added: "The children loved parading down the catwalk, and many parents even bought the clothes that they had modelled."

Other prizes were contributed by businesses, including vouchers for flower bouquets and meals for two at a restaurant in the village.
