KNUTSFORD Studio Cinema's contemporary film season continues on Monday evening with The Devil's Backbone - a strange and unpredictable ghost story.

Set during the Spanish Civil War it tells the story of Carlos, an orphan who arrives at the Santa Lucia School which shelters orphans of the Republican militia and politicians. He is taken in by headmistress Carmen and professor Casares but soon after his arrival Carlos has a run in with the violent and aggressive caretaker Jacinto, which makes him feel uneasy about being in the crumbling orphanage.

Guarded by two old Republicans and an unsympathetic young handyman, the children are apparently safe from the outside world.

But gradually Carlos uncovers the dark secrets of the school.

Gothic horror and historical drama meet when Carlos is visited by 'the one who sighs', the ghost of a young boy called Santi who disappeared in mysterious circumstances. After Santi's ghost repeatedly reveals itself to him, another student spooks Carlos with a dark secret about the boy's death.

And as war surrounds the school and violence infests it from within Carlos sets out to avenge the death of Santi.

The Devil's Backbone (15) is showing at 8pm.

Tickets cost £4.70 for adults and £3.70 for children.
