OAKMERE Cricket Club are mourning the loss of their founder Bert Haughton, who has died at his home in Shropshire.

Bert, who was 88, farmed the land in Overdale Lane, where the club is now based, in the 1950s and set up a small group of cricketers.

Oakmere CC was formed when they joined forces with members of Delamere, two of whom represented the club at Bert's funeral, Dennis Gore and Brian Crawford.

The club has another reason to look back on its proud history tomorrow (Thursday) when Oakmere's successful 1971 side hold a re-union at the club (8pm).

Three of the team have proved hard to trace and Oakmere are asking for information on their whereabouts. The are Brian Holden, Ray Davies and Roy Heaword.

If anyone can help, ring event organiser Patrick Hutchinson on 01606 882669.

As well as the past, Oakmere Cricket Club are also looking to the future and need junior players for the forthcoming season.

The club fields teams at under-15 and under-13 level and all interested players should ring Phil Guest on 01606 88920 or turn up at practice nights on Wednesdays at 6.30pm at the club, which is situated on the A49 near the Shell garage at Sandiway.
