DANNY Buxton held on to second place in the Renaultsport Clio Cup after making his second sensational fightback in successive races at his local circuit on Sunday.

Oulton Park has always been Buxton's favourite circuit and he won a double header of rounds there last year on his way to the championship.

However, he was soon having a change of heart as early as the first lap when he was shunted off at a corner and left in 14th position.

But Buxton made his way back towards the front, having to clock another fastest lap in the process, and finished in fifth place.

It puts him 12 points off the championship leader, but he is still disappointed a first win of the season eludes him.

Buxton said: "It wasn't the dream Oulton Park race it was meant to be. When I was taken out I could have been in trouble but I came through and overtook about nine cars to get up there.

"At this stage last year I'd got an eighth and a 12th place and went on to win so I'm still on course."

The third meeting of the Clio Cup season is on the bank holiday weekend of May 5 and 6 at Thruxton.
