Langworthy Reds 14

Widnes St Maries A 44

THE weekend gave new St Maries director of coaching Bobbie Goulding very different emotions.

After seeing his Salford Reds team beaten by the Vikings on Friday his second open age team defeated their Salford rivals in their own backyard.

This was by far the best performance of Brian McKeown's team made possible by the availability of some excellent under 18s.

The Maries took an early lead through Neil Higgins who was put in by Carl Leech after Anthony Hollins stole the ball on the halfway line.

Langworthy came back with one dubious try through Ferriday and an excellent one by Langworthy's M.O.M Costello.

Hollins and the ever-improving Kieran Walker combined to put in Karl O'Dougherty. It was all St Maries at this point and two further tries from the outstanding Leach put in firstly by Jay Brown and then Paul Argent emphasised their dominance.

Two Argent conversions and a try from Langworthy's Jones completed a very satisfactory first half.

The much fitter Saints stopped the home side from scoring a single point in the second half while they ran in four converted tries.

Gareth Richards scored the first, quickly followed by a Hollins solo try when he ran in 30 yards from the base of the scrum.

Hollins got his second from a similar position before Paul Knight and Ronnie Wharton put in Gary Holmes for his first try of the season.

Argent's conversion from the touchline was the best of the day.

With only one further game to be arranged against Billinge, the Maries have at long last hit top form.

Widnes St Maries ARLFC intend to run junior and youth teams at all levels next year from under 8s and especially require a coach for the under 13s.
