Winsford United 1 Curzon Ashton 0

North West Counties Division One

Saturday, April 20

THE Blues have had only one team do the double over them this season and that was champions-elect Kidsgrove Athletic.

Curzon Ashton were the only side left that could emulate the feat but they never looked likely to repeat their previous victory.

The first 12 minutes saw constant Winsford pressure result in eight fruitless corners. However, it ended with a through ball from Scott Williams that found Paul Jones and he coolly lobbed the ball over the stranded Peter Berry in the visitors' goal.

The Blues had chances to take the lead before Jones' strike, but after it Curzon came into the game and started to play some attractive football.

Josh Mitten was running the play in midfield and he had the best chance to equalise in the 23rd minute but his shot went over the bar from 10 yards despite having an open goal at his mercy.

Conkie tipped a Dave Birch effort over for a corner and then at the other end Jones went past Danny Broome and Wearden, but fired over the bar.

In the second half Winsford began to dominate proceedings and on 60 minutes Wearden was fortunate not to put through his own goal when under pressure from Scott Williams.

Williams started a run in the 69th minute that saw him beat several defenders to get to the by-line but Les Miranda was unable to get on the end of his cross.

With just five minutes left a double save by Berry kept the scoreline to one when he came out of his area to win the ball. His clearance went as far as Jones, whose shot found Berry equal to it, diving to his right to turn it for a corner.
