VISITORS to Beeston Castle are being encouraged to spend a little time enjoying the wildlife all around it.

The landmark, famed for its stunning views over six counties, is using its charms to spearhead the Government's 'Your Countryside, You're Welcome' campaign.

Staff are keen to promote not only the castle's 4,000 year history, but also the wide range of creatures and plants in the grounds.

"Sites like Beeston offer a range of habitats for plants and animals and wherever possible we encourage their development," said English Heritage Assistant Regional Director Henry Owen John.

At Beeston, Head Custodian Steven Woodman has helped to produce a leaflet detailing the wildlife attractions .

The castle walls are home to plants like wallflower ivy-leafed toadflax, black spleenwort and polypody fern, while the woodland boasts a variety of bird life, including woodpeckers and long-tailed tits. Ravens also nest on the sheer side of the crag.
