HUNDREDS of unsung heroes from Crewe and Nantwich got star treatment when the Mayor's Oscars ceremony took place.

The event brought out tales of courage and determination as well as dedication to the communities around the borough.

The Oscars were introduced by Crewe and Nantwich Borough Mayor, Cllr Terry Beard, as part of his local pride campaign.

Nominations flooded in for the various categories and shortlists were drawn up before the Oscars style ceremony took place at Nantwich Civic Hall last week.

Included among the award winners were Sybil Oakes, Vi Pownall, Stan Lewis, Owen Bottomley, Malcolm Bowyer, Edith Roberts and Keith Burrows, all from Crewe, who won Citizenship Oscars.

The good neighbour Oscar went to Ken Willington from Crewe, who spends a lot of time helping his neighbours with things like hospital trips and gardening.

The Volunteer award went to Mercia Davies from Nantwich, who has dedicated the last 11 years of her life to voluntary work in the town.

Other Oscars went to honour the best community initiative, which was judged to be Supported Community Business, which offers opportunities for those with physical and learning difficulties to enter the workplace, as well as police bravery awards and many more.

The evening was also opened up to award-winners from years gone by, whose achievements were celebrated as well.

Borough Mayor, Cllr Terry Beard, said: "Everyone was a winner. The occasion demonstrated just what the people of Crewe and Nantwich are capable of achieving, not only for themselves, but for the benefit of others."

The night also had a prize draw that raised over £850 for the Mayor's appeal in aid of the Cumberland track sport equipment kitty.
