A RUNCORN soldier battled with fatigue and sore limbs for more than 100 miles in one of Europe's biggest walking events.

Lance Bombardier Darren Jones of the 3rd Regiment Royal Horse Artillery took part in the internationally renowned Nijmegen marches in Holland.

The gruelling annual event attracts around 40,000 participants who must walk over 30, 40 or 50 km courses, every day for four days.

Darren, aged 23, was taking part for the first time. He said: "I've done quite a bit of training but it has been tougher than I expected because of the distance and the constant pressure on your feet.

"The atmosphere here has been really good."

Darren, a former pupil at Grange Comprehensive School, joined the army in 1999.

A large percentage of the walkers are from armies from all over the world and they have to walk at least 40km each day and carry 10km packs.

The Nijmegen Marches have been held since 1909 and one lady was making her 66th appearance this year.

The final parade through Nijmegen town centre was the highlight for Darren and many of his fellow marchers.

Young and old lined the streets and live bands played while well-wishers handed out flowers by their dozens.
