SIX stolen cars were gutted in separate arson attacks in secluded spots throughout Runcorn - all within 12 hours on Sunday.

Firefighters warn motorists to make sure their vehicles are kept locked and secure, to reduce the number of vehicle thefts.

Details of each incident have been passed on to the police, as a pattern is emerging.

Leading firefighter, Ken Sharratt, condemned the vandals as "reckless and dangerous".

He said: "There are lots of places in Runcorn that are not overlooked, secluded spots where thieves can set cars on fire and destroy them.

"It is a risk to the perpetrators and a risk to firefighters because they are using flammable substances. There is the possibility of the petrol tank becoming involved and an explosion.

"They are behaving in a reckless, dangerous manner.

"We pinpoint these incidents as patterns emerge and will be working with the police and other agencies to try and educate car thieves of the dangers."

Cars were set on fire in Murdishaw, Brookvale, Palacefields, Masseyfield Road, Woodhatch and Haddocks Wood.

Leading firefighter Sharratt said vehicle arson attacks are draining valuable resources.

He added: "When we attend these incidents, appliances from other areas have to be mobilised to cover for us. These car fires take appliances out into isolated areas."

He is also concerned about the effect burnt out cars has on the environment and the local community.
