Witton Albion 2 Workington Town 1 UniBond Division One Monday, August 26

WITTON manager Benny Phillips must be delighted with the way his side battled at Wincham Park on Monday to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

For long periods of the match, and the entire first half, Witton were kept on the back foot by an inventive and penetrating Workington side who looked to have enough in all departments to come away with all three points.

But after the break Witton were inspired and launched attack after attack on the Workington goal.

The midfield and attack, which throughout the first half had lacked any real ideas, suddenly gelled and used their pace to good effect to break down the Workington defence.

But more than anything it was Witton's extra fitness that killed off an unfortunate Workington side who seemed to die on their feet in the last ten minutes.

Paul Crompton, using the full width of the Wincham Park pitch sparked into life with ten minutes remaining and it was his industry and accurate crossing which gave Moseley the opportunity to level the match on 80 minutes with a wonderfully taken volley.

Then five minutes into stoppage time a neat one-two released Moseley who whipped in a first time cross that was met by the head of Burton to seal an improbable win.

Workington might blame a series of missed chances in the first half, when they were by far the more productive team and grabbed a goal after eight minutes through Robert Ennis, for their defeat.

But the real reason came in the shape of Wes Simpson and the unflappable Gary Furnival who throughout the second half mopped up attack after attack and ensured that Witton had a good platform from which to launch their relentless attacks.

Witton now have nine points out of a possible 12 from their first four games and Benny must be delighted and would surely have settled for that before the season kicked off.
