THE Birchwood Encounter sculpture which is to be placed at junction 11 of the M62 is well under construction, in a warehouse in Birchwood Park.

The 26-metre sculpture now has a distinct shape. The figures are being constructed around a large hollow pipe which was rolled in Hartlepool.

Large wooden 'ribs' have been added to the structure. Between these ribs, large, blue Styrofoam blocks have been fitted and stuck together using expanding foam.

These blocks of foam are currently being sculpted into the shape of the figures which will adorn the top of the pipe.

Involved with the project have been several pupils from Birchwood High School, they have participated in a number of ways including the shaping of the figures.

One of the pupils Lucy Kite, aged 15, says: "There is much work put into the shaping as it must be very accurate."

Other pupils have been recording the progress of the sculpture through photography and written accounts.

Photographer Hannah Wood says: "It is a symbol for Birchwood, it is very expressive. I feel privileged to be a part of this."

When asked about the project, sculptor Wilf Wilson aged 29, said: "It is a challenge, no two pieces are ever the same. I looked forward to using new skills and technology."

Sculptor Stuart Todd, aged 30, added: "It is something to be proud of. It will symbolise Birchwood."

From next week the sculpture will start to have a fibreglass covering which will start to give the sculpture its colour.
