CONGLETON motorists are being asked to help in solving the mystery of how a cyclist suffered fatal injuries.

Nigel Allcock, aged 53, was found with severe head injuries in an area of roadworks on the main Congleton to Macclesfield road.

He was found by a member of the public, and taken by ambulance to Macclesfield Hospital.

He was transferred to the North Staffordshire Royal Infirmary, where he underwent surgery and died the day after being found.

Police are keeping an open mind as to whether Mr Allcock was struck by a vehicle, or he may have fallen off his bike and hit his head.

Officers were handing out leaflets to motorists at the roadworks this week in a bid to jog the memories of people who may have been travelling along the road on the evening Mr Allcock was injured.

Mr Allcock came from Lowes Lane, Gawsworth, and he was found lying on the road beside his blue and white racing bike.

He was found at about 7.40pm on Monday August 19 in an area of roadworks near the junction of Congleton Road with Marton Lane and Maggotty Lane.

"Police need to establish how Mr Allcock came to suffer these injuries," said a police spokesman.

"To help police establish the time of this incident we would like to hear from all users of this road between 7.30pm and 8.15pm on Monday the 19th."

Anyone who can help is asked to ring the police on 01244-613694..
