WHEN the big day arrived for St Rocco's Hospice stalwart Nora Buchanan, friends and relatives knew her so well that they arranged for donations to be made to her favourite charity in place of the usual birthday gifts.

And thanks to Nora's 60th birthday bash, St Rocco's is now more than £1,000 better off.

Nora, of Belgrave Avenue, is a district nurse who has worked voluntarily for St Rocco's and has spent her life fundraising for local charities. She and her husband, Jack, even helped with the giant effort to get the first hospice off the ground.

She said: "I have fond memories of hanging curtains in the first hospice before it opened and transporting things backwards and forwards."

Nora's two sons organised a surprise celebration at Woolston British Legion to mark her birthday, despite her warning them that she wanted to spend her special day quietly. They advised guests to make donations to the hospice.

Nora added: "I had a wonderful time and the icing on the cake was that it helped out St Rocco's as well. I'm delighted with the amount that was raised."
