POLICE have appealed for the public's help as they attempt to piece together the final moments of a Warrington pensioner who died in a road crash in Golborne.

Officers investigating a multiple car pile-up, on the A580 East Lancashire Road, on August 6, which claimed the life of 66-year-old Stanley Thompson, from Latchford, have made the plea.

He was airlifted to Preston Royal Infirmary after his Ford Iveco was involved in a collision with a truck driven by a 53-year-old Stockport man.

Mr Thompson's van was shunted into four other vehicles travelling across the road and he suffered internal injuries.

Police later confirmed that Mr Thompson, a great grandfather, died in hospital. He would have celebrated his 67th birthday last week.

The road was closed for several hours while police surveyed the crash scene.

Motorists with information about how the crash occurred are asked to contact accident investigators on 0161 856 7273.
