A NATIONAL teachers' union has issued advice on how to tackle violence and disruption in schools.
The NASUWT is calling for a code of conduct with a zero tolerance policy for those pupils who break the rules in schools.
The union wants staff to be given training in avoiding and managing dangerous situations with members of senior managerial teams on hand in case incidents occur.
Eamonn O'Kane, general secretary of NASUWT, said: "It is unacceptable that teachers should face violence at work.
"NASUWT guidance highlights options available to limit the threat and by including this in the diary every member can carry details of the steps necessary to protect themselves in school.
"Although the numbers of pupils excluded last year went up for the first time in the past six years, NASUWT remains concerned that governing bodies continue to readmit violent and disruptive pupils."
New guidance will also include help for teachers who do suffer from violent or disruptive pupils and how to report incidents.
