THE last few weeks of Newton Cricket Club's season promises to be ultra exciting.

All three of their senior teams have something to play for with only three games left to go.

The first team moved into pole position in the race to win the Liverpool and District Cricket League Division One title at the weekend with impressive victories over Caldy and Liverpool.

Previous leaders Huyton lost on Bank Holiday Monday and with Colwyn Bay not playing, the Crow Laners took advantage.

They defeated Caldy thanks largely to great bowling by Day, who took four wickets for 49 runs, and Finney, who took 4-55.

Their performances helped Newton dismiss Caldy for only 116 runs - a target they reached with relative ease due to fine batting by Boardman, 52 runs, Mike Walkden, 32 and Danny Barlow, 22 not out.

Newton were equally impressive against Liverpool. They restricted the home side to 123 runs for seven wickets before Liverpool's tail wagged to enable them to post an imposing total of 199. Newton's best bowlers were Walkden, 4-33, Day, 4-65 and Finney, 2-55.

In reply, Warrington batted superbly and they secured victory with more than two overs to spare. Boardman, 74 not out, Day, 38 and John Pemberton, 27 not out, played particularly well.

Newton Seconds, who have a cup final to look forward to, stayed on course for a top three finish in their league with a good win on Saturday and a draw on Monday.

On Saturday, they were in trouble early on against Northern's second string before good batting by Sherlock, 38 and Brookes, 35, enabled them to post a competitive score of 100.

Jones and Wakefield then put Northern to the sword with some outstanding bowling as Newton won by 32 runs.

On Monday, Newton posted a good score of 225-4 against Huyton Seconds thanks to good performances by Steven Appleton, 38, Neil Kelly, 40, Graeme Sherlock, 51 not out and Dave Brookes, 30 not out.

However, Huyton also batted well, reaching 121-5 at the end of play.

Newton Thirds also stayed in the hunt for league honours with a great win at Lytham Thirds.

Newton bowled the home side out for only 46 with Chris Birchall, David Fearnley, Mike Tandy and Mark Warburton taking two wickets each.

Newton reached their target with consummate ease. The top scorer in their nine-wicket victory was S. Appleton, 29 not out.
