IF you have enjoyed watching Kiefer Sutherland in TV drama 24 over the past few months, then check out this superb British horror film from 1973, in which his dad, Donald, shows what a great actor he was in his prime.
In one of the most memorable opening sequences ever filmed, John and Laura Baxter (Sutherland and Julie Christie) are left shattered when their daughter drowns while trying to retrieve her ball from a pond.
The couple move to Venice, trying to put the tragedy behind them, but when they meet a blind clairvoyant who tells them that their daughter is still alive, their world is turned upside down again.
The father, weighed down by guilt, starts seeing a small figure appearing in Venice's wintry shadows - but can it really be his daughter?
Director Nicolas Roeg creates a taut atmosphere throughout, and the film builds to a climax which will leave your heart pounding. Ian Kelly
