OUR faithful froth-blowers were quick out of the traps with an answer to the Greyhound Inn yedscratter (August 22).

Reader Bill Jackson of Woodlands Road, Haresfinch had asked if anyone could say whether a pub of that name had once graced College Street, St Helens. Apparently this had been the subject of much debate among his work colleagues.

Within hours the response came rolling in. And yes, indeedy, there was just such an old-time watering hole which put up shutters for the last time on July 8, 1916.

Boasted

It must have been difficult not to satisfy even the most heavy-duty of thirsts when stepping out down College Street in the good old days.

For a list kindly forwarded to me by J. Hilton of Sutton Road shows that it once boasted seven pubs along its relatively short length, two of which - the Clarendon and the Lamb - exist to this day. The others were the Millstone, Griffin, White Horse and White Lion, as well as the Greyhound.

H MY thanks to Mr Hilton, to that former prince of publicans, Harold Burrows, to Jean Murphy and to a well-informed reader by the initials of B. A. and all others who latched on to the frothy topic.
